We decided to skip fixing the hail damage on the car. Country Insurance was fantastic. Once I called them the adjuster was out in a couple of days to look at the damage. They fairly compensated me and I had a check within one week of my first phone call. Absolutely no complaints there.
Upon receiving the check we deposited it in the emergency fund and we are back on track to complete the emergency fund by the end of the year. If you recall we are shooting for 6 months of living expenses as our goal. The previous auto, oven, and ac repairs took a little bite out of it but, now we are back just about where we left off. The car doesn't look too bad. If I continue to put off washing it no one will ever notice :)!
It is certainly not a BMW or something nice like that. It's just a Yaris and with the way I am doing miles now, it won't be worth much by this time next year anyways! On the other hand, a fully funded emergency fund at the end of the year translates into a happy wife! Who can put a price on that?
zzzzzzzzzzz. !!!!! Oh!, Oh! a new post! High there Dan! Just noticed the new post. I think that taking the cash and putting it in the emergency fund is a great move. It's just what Kristy and I did when we were hit by hail too. It has happened twice, once with a car we had and the second on a brand new roof. We needed a new driveway and the car damage funded that. We needed new windows in the house and the roof fund covered that. We didn't replace the roof and its warrantee is now void. If we have to replace it it will be full price to us. However, it was brand new at the time of the hail damage and sustained enough damage to trigger full replacement on paper, but in actuality the damage wasn't all that bad. As long as Kristy and I don't sell its a mute point. If we do sell, it may be that we will have to drop the price to cover a percentage of replacement costs to the new owners. At the same time the windows have increased the sales value of the home and cut heating costs substantially. Pennies from heaven...literally. Good to hear from you.
ReplyDeleteDan, I've some food for thought regarding your blog. I think you should consider expanding the scope of its mission statement. I sincerely believe that you and Nicole will experience many blessings from following the debt free living path. I also look forward to hearing about what those experiences are. At the same time things will begin to unfold over longer and longer periods of time as you settle in to the new "Normal." I would be most interested in hearing from you on other aspects of your walk with the Lord and your bride. While you rest in the debt free life, what comes to mind spiritually, emotionally, experientially that is a fruit of this walk. There is so much to this beyond money, no? It would give you so much more to write about, ponder, explore. Just a thought.
ReplyDeleteBeen thinking about this very thing. I just haven't had enough thought on the matter. I have some ideas. Be patient with me. It's coming.
